Sergei Rachmaninov (1873–1943) composed his single-movement cantata Spring (Vesna, Op. 20) at the age of 29 in 1902, setting a poem by Nikolay Nekrasov to music for baritone solo, chorus and orchestra. In the work, a betrayed husband who had previously plotted revenge against his unfaithful wife finds release from his murderous thoughts as he witnesses the return of spring following the end of winter. Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953) created his ballet Romeo and Juliet, based on Shakespeare’s play, in 1935, later revising it in 1940. The orchestral suites drawn from the ballet are characterised by their suggestiveness, drama and extraordinary illustrative power. Rachmaninov’s grand choral symphony The Bells (Kolokola, Op. 35) was composed in 1913 as a large-scale work in four movements set to a poem by Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849). It traces the role of bells in human life, from sleigh bells and wedding bells to alarm bells and funeral bells. Polina Pasztircsák, Attila Fekete and Levente Molnár represent the cream of Hungarian singers and have achieved considerable international success. Csaba Somos has been director of the Hungarian National Choir since January 2016, while the Szent István Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1954 by conductor József Záborszky.
