Most trends in 20th-century modernist music were openly hostile to the aesthetic of 19th-century Romanticism, and reconquered for themselves the music of older eras, that of the Baroque period or the Middle Ages. Yet Romanticism was rehabilitated during the decades of postmodernism, bringing revolutionary pathos (Levente Gyöngyösi), irony and nostalgia (György Orbán), and transcendent virtuosity (László Dubrovay) back into vogue with composers.
