It is not particularly difficult to lower the lights gradually in a theatre in an artistic and technical sense. But after eighty minutes of total darkness, it is a huge challenge to find a reason, a justification and a way for there to be light once more. Historic memory is an uplifting and responsible celebration of theatre, an active evidence of the present time. The Dohány Street Sheriff. (RevizorOnline, TamásTarján) Then the girls hurled themselves en masse at the high-voltage wire. And one of my girl friends from Jászapáti said “Come on, let’s take a run at the fence.” I said “Are you mad? I won’t do it.” “Why not?” I said “Listen, if I take a run at the fence and they lose the war the next day, I will have a fit in the hereafter.” Those around me who heard this, started to laugh. There was not a single suicide that day. Due to one burst of laughter. (Ágnes Moller) The text from the play was chosen jointly by János Mohácsi and the actors. Its backbone consists of personal memories and there are numerous texts by guests. The case studies, the recollections of survivors, literary works, extracts from diaries, historical sources, notebooks and personal collections, help to present the ambiance of the historical period. In between the testimony and written material there are repeated selfparodies and characteristic Jewish jokes, which tell of the same fate; the humour makes the tragic historical background more comprehensible – as in all real theatre, the tragedy comes through the laughter. The text of the performance is made up of the recollections of those deported during the Holocaust and is played in complete darkness.
