“Like the novel, the performance plunges us into everyday life in 1930s Moscow, but magic soon emerges, we find ourselves in an asylum, and ’reality’ mingles with the story of Jesus Christ and Pontius Pilate. What matters about the world of Moscow/Bulgakov is presenting the oppressive nature of the regime. We have stripped the performance of its ’communist’ line."

True, he practises black magic and does a series of horrible things in Moscow, but what matters to him in Bulgakov’s story is to make sure the Master finally finishes his novel and he and Margarita are reunited.
